Preserving Healthy Food For Our Future
South Africa’s favourite chain of seafood restaurants, Ocean Basket, is proud to announce that the company, both the restaurant franchise group and wholesale company is now fully compliant with the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI).
Compliance has been achieved in every stage of Ocean Basket’s business, from purchasing of fish to distribution as well as development and presentation of menus. Diners will be pleased to know that each Ocean Basket restaurant around the country is SASSI compliant.
SASSI, which works with the World Wildlife Fund, has numerous aims, one being to shift demand away from over-exploited fish like cod, towards more sustainable choices. As part of this exercise, Ocean Basket is working with SASSI to create awareness around the conservation of sea fish.
Being SASSI compliant, Ocean Basket buys fish only from licensed dealers and fishers and never deals in fish that SASSI have said should never be consumed. Furthermore, Ocean Basket uses only the recognised names on its menu and always makes sure that its fish are of a legal size.
Ocean Basket encourages customers to visit the SASSI website and learn more about sustainable fishing. After all, the more customers know, the more keen they are to preserve this healthy resource for their children and future generations. The website is at www.wwfsassi.co.za.
